I Want to Know More About Christianity – Where Do I Begin?

We live in remarkable times. All around us, more and more people—especially those under 30—are beginning to think deeply about faith, spirituality, and the big questions of life again. Bible sales are up. Church interest is quietly growing. And atheism? It’s not holding the same cultural sway it did even ten years ago.

Why? I think it’s because the secular answers simply aren’t cutting it. They don’t satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart—longings for meaning, purpose, identity, and hope.

Maybe that describes you right now. You’re curious. You’re asking questions. You’re wondering where to even begin. A friend of ours, a teenager who lives just a few doors down, recently said to my wife, “I want to start thinking about spiritual things … but I have no idea where to start.”

If that’s how you feel—or you have a friend like that—the advice below is for you.

Here are seven simple, honest steps to begin exploring Christianity …

1. Try praying

Give it a go! Even if you’re not sure God is real, try it. Try praying something like:

“God, I don’t know if you’re there. I don’t even know what I believe. But if you’re real—if you care—would you make yourself known to me?”

Many people have started their faith journey with a simple, honest prayer like that—and seen extraordinary things unfold.

And if you want some further help in giving prayer a go, here’s a free guide to help you out.

2. Take a good look at Jesus

Christianity isn’t first and foremost about rules, rituals, or religion. It’s about a person: Jesus. If you’ve never read one of the Gospel accounts of his life, start with Mark’s Gospel—it’s short, fast-paced, and easy to read or listen to. Ask yourself: Who is this man? What did he say about himself? And do I believe him?

3. Lean into your questions

You will have questions. Everyone does. That’s okay! Don’t push them aside—explore them. The Solas website has nearly 200 short videos in our Short Answers series that deal with tough questions about God, science, suffering, faith, and more. Chances are, we’ve tackled yours already in a helpful and accessible way, so take a look.

4. Talk to a Christian friend

If you’ve got a Christian friend, there’s probably a reason they’re in your life. Ask them about their story. What difference does Jesus make to them? Ask them why they believe what they believe?

5. Do some reading

If you’re more of a thinker, explore a book designed for beginners. I can highly recommend Have You Ever Wondered?—a short, accessible book written by a team from Solas and some of our friends. It’s perfect for those exploring Christianity for the first time.

6. Try a course

Two fantastic ones are Alpha and Christianity Explored. These free courses run in churches across the UK (and beyond) and are designed to help people ask questions, explore faith, and discuss what Jesus means—all in a friendly, no-pressure environment, often over food. You’ll meet others asking the same questions as you.

7. Visit a church

Yes, this one might feel a bit scary—but most churches are actually warm, welcoming communities where you can ask questions and explore faith at your own pace. If you’ve got a Christian friend, ask to go along with them. Or reach out to me and I can try to connect you with a church near you.

So what next …?

Don’t just think “Hmm, interesting…” and scroll on. Take a step. Any step. Pray. Read. Ask. Visit. Watch a video. Try a course. You don’t have to have it all figured out—but the journey towards Jesus begins with a first step.
